NWQ Enabling Infrastructure Masterplan 2024

With federal and state governments promoting policy platforms reliant on significant growth across the critical minerals and renewable sectors in our region, the time is right to highlight the need to go “back to basics” and increase funding for the fundamental services, such as roads, housing, water storage and telecommunications, which will be required to support future economic planning.

North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (NWQROC) published its NWQ Enabling Infrastructure Masterplan on 29 May 2024, ahead of a NWQROC delegation to Canberra – officially kicking off its state and federal election advocacy platform.

The Masterplan is the result of more than nine months of collaboration between all 11 NWQROC councils, Regional Development Australia Townsville and NWQ, and economic consultants AEC Group Research.

The Masterplan details the status of 34 priority shovel-ready projects across the North West, requiring $300 million in funding shortfalls, as well as more than 170 other infrastructure proposals that will lay the foundation to meet government “big ticket” policy aspirations.

The Masterplan in addition to the NWQROC Strategic Plan are also providing input to the development of the RDA – Townsville and North West Regional Strategic Plan to provide maximum alignment which is an important consideration when the Federal Government is considering regional priorities. It will also form the basis of a further submission to the refresh of the Developing Northern Australia White Paper and related Action Plan.
